Lameness is one of the most prevalent and serious welfare problems in dairy and beef cattle. Effective prevention requires understanding its causes and implementing multi-faceted farm-level management strategies.
Cattle lameness is a welfare crisis in dairy farming that has persisted for decades despite the availability of effective prevention and treatment tools. Its persistence reflects a combination of factors: high management complexity, economic pressure that deprioritises prevention, underestimation of the pain experienced by lame animals, and insufficient integration of lameness welfare into farm assurance auditing. Lame cows experience chronic pain that affects every aspect of their daily experience — they rest less, eat less, interact less with conspecifics, and show reduced reproductive performance that reflects systemic welfare compromise. The most effective prevention approaches are integrated: improving nutrition through the transition period to maintain digital cushion integrity, optimising cubicle design and bedding to reduce standing time and improve lying comfort, maintaining flooring and gangway conditions to reduce slip risk and injury, and implementing systematic locomotion scoring with action protocols that ensure rapid treatment of newly lame animals. Farms that successfully reduce lameness prevalence below 10% demonstrate that much higher prevalence rates are management failures rather than inevitable consequences of dairy production.
