Narwhals are enigmatic Arctic cetaceans whose distinctive tusk has made them iconic. Climate change and noise from increased Arctic shipping are creating new welfare challenges for these highly specialised animals.
Narwhal welfare is shaped by the extreme specialisation of this species to Arctic conditions that are rapidly changing. Shipping noise affects narwhals acutely — studies using suction-cup tag data show that narwhals respond to ship noise with dramatic cessation of deep foraging dives and rapid shallow swimming that can exhaust animals and disrupt feeding efficiency. Chronic noise exposure across increasingly busy shipping lanes creates sustained physiological stress. Savssats — entrapment events in closing sea ice — cause acute welfare harm to potentially hundreds of animals simultaneously: narwhals trapped in a small breathing hole experience extreme crowding, competition for air access, and stress from inability to escape. Deaths in these events occur from exhaustion, crushing, and oxygen deprivation. Climate change makes the sea ice dynamics that create savssats less predictable, potentially increasing their frequency. The narwhal's combination of extreme habitat specialisation and sensitivity to noise makes it particularly vulnerable to the cascade of changes occurring in the Arctic.
