Positive cattle welfare represents the frontier of welfare science for farm animals. Traditional welfare assessment focused on identifying and counting negative welfare outcomes — lameness prevalence, disease incidence, injury rates. Positive welfare assessment asks a different question: are these animals experiencing anything good? The answer, for well-managed cattle, is clearly yes — they form social bonds, engage in play, explore their environment, and show approach behaviour toward familiar, positively associated handlers. These are genuine positive experiences, not merely the absence of negative ones. Farms that cultivate positive welfare — through gentle handling that builds positive human associations, provision of social stability that allows group bonds to form, enrichment that engages exploration, and outdoor access that allows natural behaviour — produce cattle with measurably better affective states. The challenge is translating this science into assessment tools and management standards that incentivise positive welfare provision rather than only penalising welfare failures.
