Sea lice infestations cause real and significant welfare harm to farmed salmon. Lesions from feeding lice expose underlying tissue to infection; heavy burdens compromise the skin's barrier function against seawater, causing ionic imbalance and osmoregulatory stress. Salmon show aversion responses to lice and display wound-directed behaviours consistent with pain experience. Treatment interventions carry their own welfare costs: thermal treatment (warm water delousing) causes thermal stress and scale loss; hydrogen peroxide bath treatments cause respiratory distress at higher concentrations; mechanical brush and laser systems cause acute physical disturbance. Cleaner fish welfare is itself a concern — wrasse and lumpfish used as biological control agents have high mortality rates in cage environments, often lacking adequate habitat and suffering from disease. Reducing lice burdens requires integrated pest management combining monitoring, biological control, physical barriers (snorkel designs that keep salmon below surface where lice larvae concentrate), and targeted treatment only when thresholds are exceeded.
