Wildlife rehabilitation involves the rescue, treatment, and release of injured, orphaned, or sick wild animals. Welfare standards throughout the process determine both individual outcomes and conservation value.
Wildlife rehabilitation offers real welfare benefits when conducted to high standards, but poor practice can cause significant harm. The most important welfare decision in rehabilitation is often the triage decision: an animal with injuries incompatible with wild survival should be humanely euthanised promptly rather than subjected to prolonged treatment, multiple procedures, and extended captivity with no prospect of a wild life. This is not failure — it is the most welfare-positive outcome available. For animals that can recover and be released, minimising stress during treatment is paramount: unfamiliar environments, human handling, treatment procedures, and confinement are all intensely stressful for wild animals. Appropriate anaesthesia for procedures, quiet housing with appropriate cover and complexity, and minimal handling consistent with good care all reduce this burden. The risk of human habituation — animals losing appropriate fear of humans through extended contact in care — is a real release-stage welfare and survival concern, particularly for mammals. Training wild animals to voluntarily approach humans for food, even inadvertently, creates a post-release risk that reduces the value of rehabilitation.
