Zoo nutrition welfare encompasses both deficiency diseases from inadequate nutrient provision and excess-related conditions like obesity, dental disease, and metabolic disorders from inappropriate diets. The challenge is immense: a zoo may house hundreds of species each with distinct nutritional ecology, in quantities that make individualised wild diet replication impossible. Practical approaches include: working with zoo nutritionists to formulate complete diets for common species; providing whole-prey items to carnivores where feasible (significantly improves dentition, enrichment, and nutrient completeness); offering browse to browsers and grazers as both nutrition and enrichment; and regularly reviewing body condition scores to detect over- or under-nutrition early. Vitamin and mineral supplementation fills gaps but does not replace the complexity of natural food matrices. The nutritional needs of many lesser-kept species remain poorly characterised — a research gap with direct welfare implications. Advances in portable spectroscopy and dietary analysis are enabling better real-time assessment of forage nutritional quality in captive settings.
