Positive welfare for cattle requires more than preventing injury and disease. Cattle are curious, social animals that thrive when they can express natural behaviours — grazing, exploring, playing, forming stable social bonds, and lying down comfortably for long periods. Farms providing pasture access, appropriate stocking densities, and social stability consistently score higher on positive welfare indicators. Stockmanship quality matters enormously: calm, consistent human interactions reduce fear and stress, while positive human-animal relationships can themselves be a source of positive welfare. Welfare audit systems are slowly integrating positive indicators, but more work is needed to validate and standardise them across production systems.
