Vaquita: Racing Against Extinction

Welfare Considerations

The vaquita's welfare situation is tragically constrained: there are too few individuals to support captive breeding, and wild individuals continue to drown in illegal gillnets. Each entanglement death involves drowning — a highly stressful and painful experience. The failure of the 2017 capture attempt demonstrated that even well-intentioned intervention can be fatal for this species. The only welfare-compatible path forward is complete elimination of illegal gillnet fishing in the vaquita refuge zone and enforcement of existing protections. International demand for totoaba swim bladders — sold in China as a luxury product — is the root economic driver of the vaquita's extinction.
