Many purebred dog breed standards select for traits that cause chronic suffering. Reform is needed to prioritise health and welfare over exaggerated physical appearance.
Breed standard reform is one of the highest-leverage welfare interventions available within companion animal medicine. When breed standards reward extreme conformation — flat faces, bulging eyes, tiny nostrils, excessively folded skin — breeders select for animals that struggle to breathe, sleep, exercise, or give birth naturally. Puppies born into these bodies face a lifetime of discomfort, surgical correction, and reduced lifespan. Reform requires coordinated pressure on kennel clubs to explicitly penalise welfare-compromising traits, consumer education to shift demand toward healthier dogs, and veterinary gatekeeping — refusing to perform corrective surgeries that perpetuate demand for unhealthy breeds.
