Welfare Considerations

Feline CKD welfare is managed on a spectrum between aggressive intervention and palliative comfort. Well-managed CKD cats can live for years with good quality of life through dietary phosphate restriction, fluid support, blood pressure control, and regular monitoring. However, the welfare calculus shifts as the disease progresses: at IRIS Stage 4, the burden of treatment must be weighed against its benefits. Many cats are overtreated in their final weeks — subjected to stressful vet visits and interventions that offer little benefit. A quality-of-life centred approach, using validated feline quality-of-life scales and regular owner-vet discussions, allows more cats to live comfortably and die peacefully rather than experiencing a medicalised decline.
