Precision livestock farming (PLF) uses sensors, cameras, and AI to monitor individual animals. Its potential to improve welfare at scale is significant but requires careful implementation.
Precision livestock farming offers genuine welfare promise: earlier detection of health problems, reduced need for invasive routine management, and individualised care at scales previously impossible. A lameness detection system that alerts farmers two days before visible symptoms allows earlier treatment and less suffering. Automated health monitoring can reduce the burden on human observers without replacing skilled stockmanship. However, PLF is not a substitute for good stockmanship — it is a complement. Poorly designed systems can increase unnecessary interventions, create alert fatigue, or erode the human attention that remains irreplaceable for welfare assessment. Welfare-focused PLF development must centre animal wellbeing outcomes, not just productivity metrics.
