Wild reef fish have often never experienced confinement — the shock of captivity after a life in open ocean creates extreme stress. Consumers who choose captive-bred marine fish, avoid species with low captive survival rates, and source from certified sustainable suppliers can significantly reduce their contribution to this welfare burden.

What You Can Do

Choose captive-bred marine fish over wild-caught wherever available — clownfish, dottybacks, and dragonets are available captive-bred.
Ask your aquarium supplier whether fish are cyanide-free and what their collection verification process is.
Avoid species known to have very low captive survival rates regardless of collection method.
Support Marine Aquarium Council certification and similar schemes verifying ethical collection practices.
