Dehorning is one of the most painful routine procedures in cattle farming. Evidence-based pain management is available but underused, causing millions of cattle to suffer unnecessarily each year.
Dehorning without pain management is a preventable welfare harm inflicted on millions of cattle annually. Research consistently shows that dehorning causes acute pain, stress hormone elevation, and behavioral changes indicative of suffering that persist for 24–48 hours. Long-term chronic pain from nerve damage following surgical dehorning is also documented. The barrier to improvement is not knowledge — effective pain management protocols are well-established — but cost and industry norms. Polled genetics (naturally hornless cattle) offer a permanent preventive solution that eliminates the need for the procedure entirely, while maintaining production performance. Welfare-focused farming requires mandatory pain relief for any dehorning that does occur and accelerated transition to polled genetics.
