Pet obesity causes genuine, ongoing suffering that is largely invisible to owners because it develops slowly and animals rarely vocalize pain. An obese dog with arthritis experiences chronic joint pain with every movement — but continues to wag and interact, masking the problem from loving owners. Obesity also reduces the ability to play, thermoregulate, and enjoy normal activity — reducing quality of life independent of physical disease. The welfare impact is compounded by the fact that owners typically cause obesity through excess food and treats given as expressions of affection. Veterinary guidance on appropriate body condition scoring and caloric management, delivered compassionately and without judgment, is the most effective intervention for this common and preventable welfare problem.
