Not all zoo accreditation is equal. Understanding what rigorous accreditation requires — and what it doesn't — helps visitors and donors support facilities genuinely committed to animal welfare.
Zoo welfare transparency is essential for informed consumer choice. AZA accreditation provides meaningful baseline standards but is not sufficient to guarantee high welfare — facilities that barely meet minimum requirements may still house animals in conditions that cause chronic stress. Genuinely welfare-focused zoos go beyond compliance: they publish welfare outcome data, conduct behavioral welfare assessments, provide animals with choice and control over their environment, and participate in meaningful conservation programs for species they exhibit. Facilities that breed animals for exhibition without contributing to wild population recovery, or that use animals in shows and rides, are prioritizing revenue over welfare regardless of accreditation status.
