Marine protected areas (MPAs) benefit fish welfare by reducing fishing pressure, protecting habitat, and allowing populations to recover — but their design and enforcement critically determine their effectiveness.
From a fish welfare perspective, MPAs represent one of the most impactful large-scale interventions available. Inside effective no-take MPAs, fish experience dramatically reduced chronic stress from fishing gear encounters, bycatch interactions, and anthropogenic noise. They can grow to natural sizes, express full behavioral repertoires, and live out natural lifespans. Fish welfare within MPAs also improves ecosystem function — natural predator-prey dynamics, schooling behaviors, and complex social interactions can proceed without constant disruption. The welfare benefit extends beyond MPA boundaries as fish populations spill over into adjacent areas. Critically, MPA effectiveness depends on enforcement, community engagement, and adaptive management — poorly designed or unenforced MPAs deliver little welfare benefit.
