Providing enrichment to farmed pigs is required in the EU and increasingly recognized as essential welfare practice — but the type, novelty, and accessibility of enrichment materials dramatically affects effectiveness.
Pig enrichment effectiveness varies enormously based on material characteristics. Research consistently shows that pigs prefer destructible, organic materials they can root through, chew, and ingest — straw, hay, wood shavings, and compost — over hard, non-destructible items like rubber balls or plastic toys. The key behavioral motivation is rooting: an investigatory behavior central to pig cognition and emotional state. When rooting substrates are available, pigs spend more time in positive behaviors, show fewer signs of frustration, and exhibit dramatically reduced tail biting. "Enrichment" that does not engage rooting motivation provides little welfare benefit. Novel materials presented on a rotation schedule sustain engagement longer than static provision. Implementing effective enrichment on slatted-floor systems requires creative engineering solutions.
