Tilapia welfare suffers from the species's reputation for hardiness. Because tilapia can survive in degraded conditions that kill other fish, there is industry tendency to allow water quality to deteriorate beyond welfare-optimal levels. Chronic exposure to elevated ammonia, low oxygen, and high CO2 causes physiological stress even when it does not cause death. High stocking densities cause chronic aggression, fin damage, and social stress. The absence of environmental complexity in typical pond or cage systems prevents expression of natural behavior. Tilapia preference tests clearly show they prefer higher-quality water — their tolerance of degradation reflects physiological resilience, not indifference to conditions. Welfare standards for tilapia production should focus on water quality parameters, density limits, and oxygen management.
