Individual amphibian welfare in the context of population declines is complex but important. Chytrid infection causes disruption of electrolyte balance through the skin, leading to cardiac arrest — a potentially distressing physiological process. Animals dying from chytridiomycosis show behavioral abnormalities suggesting distress. Environmental pollution causes skin irritation, developmental abnormalities, and immunosuppression. Drought forces amphibians to endure desiccation stress in shrinking habitats. The permeable skin that makes amphibians ecologically valuable also makes them uniquely vulnerable to environmental toxins, with welfare consequences for individual animals. While amphibian sentience research is less advanced than for vertebrates like fish, the behavioral and physiological evidence for pain sensitivity is growing.
