BRD causes significant suffering in affected cattle. Fever, labored breathing, and systemic illness create a state comparable to severe human influenza or pneumonia — a welfare harm affecting 10-20% of feedlot cattle. The condition is predictable: transport, mixing, and immune stress create the conditions for bacterial pneumonia. Earlier identification and treatment dramatically reduces both duration of suffering and mortality. The challenge is that sick cattle in large feedlots may not be identified until disease is advanced, because careful daily observation of thousands of cattle is labor-intensive. Precision livestock technology including infrared thermometry, accelerometers, and AI-assisted behavioral monitoring offers promise for earlier detection. Reducing transport distances and commingling would prevent some BRD, but economic pressures work against this.
