Stocking density is one of the most significant welfare determinants in fish farming. Excessive crowding causes chronic physiological stress, increased aggression, injury, disease susceptibility, and reduced growth — harming both fish welfare and farm productivity.
Fish are capable of experiencing chronic stress in ways that compromise their welfare over extended periods. Unlike acute stressors, chronic crowding maintains elevated cortisol continuously, suppressing growth, reproduction, and immune responses. Behavioural signs — fin damage, reduced activity, surface breathing, and abnormal aggression — are measurable welfare indicators that correlate with density. Solutions exist: species-appropriate density limits, current-based swimming lane systems that give fish agency over their position in the water column, improved oxygen supplementation, and staggered feeding regimes all reduce competitive stress. High-welfare certification schemes increasingly include maximum density requirements as a core standard.
