Sea bass welfare improvement has accelerated in Europe following the expansion of the Five Domains model to fish and growing consumer pressure on certification schemes. The key welfare challenges are interconnected: high density worsens parasite transmission, increases cortisol chronically, and reduces immune function, making disease management harder. At slaughter, the nervous system of sea bass requires effective stunning before the fish loses consciousness — live chilling is now understood to be a prolonged, aversive process. Industry leaders are shifting toward automated electrical stunning or CO2 narcosis followed by rapid killing, and parasitic management through cleaner fish (wrasse) rather than chemical treatments. Welfare-certified sea bass now carries a measurable premium in Northern European markets.
