Atlantic salmon farming in open sea cages is one of the world's largest aquaculture operations. Stocking density, sea lice, and slaughter practices remain major welfare concerns, but significant reform progress is being driven by Norwegian welfare science and certification schemes.
Atlantic salmon welfare has attracted more scientific attention than virtually any other farmed fish species, and the gap between research knowledge and industry practice is closing — partly through genuine industry concern about production losses from welfare failures, and partly through regulatory pressure and certification market dynamics. Crowding at high density increases fin damage, aggression, and chronic cortisol elevation. Sea lice infestations cause direct tissue damage and the treatments used to manage them create acute welfare costs. The key welfare improvement opportunities are: lower stocking densities (below 15 kg/m³), integrated pest management for sea lice that minimises treatment frequency, controlled atmosphere or electrical slaughter, and systematic use of validated welfare assessment tools by trained farm staff.
