Wildlife corridors that enable elephant movement between fragmented forest patches are among the most impactful investments in both elephant conservation and welfare. They reduce human-elephant conflict, restore natural behaviour, and protect population viability.
Corridor connectivity is a welfare intervention as much as a conservation one. Elephants in fragmented landscapes are chronically stressed by the inability to complete natural movement patterns — seasonal migrations that evolved over millennia to access mineral licks, water sources, and seasonally variable food. Blocked corridors force elephants into conflict situations that are acutely stressful: raiding crops at night while avoiding human activity, being chased, hazed with firecrackers, or injured in retaliatory action. Restoring corridor connectivity allows elephants to express complete natural movement behaviour — reducing both the conservation pressure of population isolation and the welfare pressure of chronic conflict-related stress on individual animals.
