Cattle welfare science is advancing beyond preventing negative states to actively measuring and promoting positive experiences including play, social bonding, and comfort-seeking. This shift has practical implications for how farms are designed and assessed.
The shift toward positive welfare assessment in cattle represents a maturation of the field beyond the reactive, deficit-based Five Freedoms framework. Identifying play, grooming, and anticipatory behaviours as targets — not just the absence of lameness, disease, and fear — fundamentally changes what "good welfare" means on a farm. It also changes farm design priorities: systems that allow cattle to express exploratory behaviour, maintain social bonds, and experience environmental variation create positive welfare states that are now measurable with validated tools. The Welfare Quality scoring system integrates positive welfare measures at the farm level, enabling benchmarking and improvement tracking. The economic argument for positive welfare is also developing: cattle expressing positive states show better reproductive performance, immune function, and feed conversion.
