Pangasius welfare in Vietnamese aquaculture reflects the challenges of applying animal welfare standards to a high-volume, low-cost production system serving global markets. The physiological tolerance of pangasius to low-oxygen environments has historically been used to justify poor water quality management — the fish survive but experience chronic physiological stress that compromises immune function and quality of life. High stocking densities create resource competition and injury. Welfare improvements are achievable without prohibitive cost: better dissolved oxygen management, reduced stocking densities, improved water turnover, and less stressful harvest methods all represent meaningful interventions. International market pressure through buyer standards has proven effective at driving welfare improvements in Vietnamese pangasius farming — demonstrating the power of consumer demand in global supply chains.
