Feedlot welfare varies enormously between well-managed and poorly managed operations, making blanket characterisation difficult. In the best feedlot systems, cattle have access to clean water, appropriate shade, comfortable lying areas, balanced diets, and skilled health monitoring that catches disease early. In the worst, chronic disease, heat stress, injuries from overcrowding, and inadequate veterinary access cause widespread suffering. Bovine respiratory disease — the leading feedlot health problem — causes pneumonia that is painful and often fatal without early treatment; its prevalence reflects both the stress of transport and mixing, and the adequacy of health monitoring. High-grain diets necessary for rapid weight gain cause rumen acidosis and liver disease at rates that indicate systemic metabolic compromise. Grass-finishing systems avoid some feedlot welfare problems at the cost of longer production timelines.
