Sun bears — the smallest of the eight bear species — are increasingly kept in sanctuary and zoo settings. Their highly active, intelligent nature demands exceptional enrichment programmes for welfare.
Sun bear welfare in captivity illustrates the transformative effect of enrichment quality on individual wellbeing. Sun bears that received appropriate forest access, climbing structures, natural substrate, and food-based cognitive challenges at the BSBCC demonstrate dramatically better welfare than the same species in barren concrete enclosures. The characteristic tongue-probing and foraging behaviours of sun bears require enrichment specifically designed to engage them: honey logs, termite mound simulators, buried food, and browse provision. Sun bears rescued from the illegal pet trade frequently arrive with severe psychological damage from years in inadequate conditions — rehabilitation can reverse some stereotypic behaviours but not all. The BSBCC model — combining rehabilitation, forest access, and eventual wild release where possible — represents best practice for this species.
