Goldfish welfare suffers from one of the most persistent myths in pet keeping: that goldfish are disposable animals with short lives and minimal needs. In appropriate conditions, goldfish are long-lived, intelligent fish that recognise their owners, respond to feeding routines, and show individual personalities. The bowl is the primary welfare problem — inadequate volume, no filtration to process fish waste, and no surface area for gas exchange creates conditions of chronic ammonia toxicity and oxygen deprivation. A minimum tank size for a single fancy goldfish is 75-100 litres with powerful filtration; common goldfish require outdoor ponds to thrive long-term.
