Chinchillas are highly active, intelligent animals that require large, multi-level cages with extensive climbing opportunities — the typical commercial cage marketed for chinchillas provides insufficient space and no climbing enrichment. Social needs are strong — single chinchillas are more stressed than paired animals, yet introductions require careful management as chinchillas can be territorial.
