US catfish industry welfare is shaped by the combination of extensive earthen pond systems and harvest and slaughter practices that have not incorporated welfare science advances. Earthen pond culture, while providing more naturalistic environments than cage systems, creates water quality challenges — summer algal blooms can crash dissolved oxygen overnight, causing mass mortality events from hypoxia. This represents both a welfare and production failure. Harvest by crowding seine creates intense crowding stress before air exposure during loading. Slaughter by asphyxiation without pre-stunning allows fish to remain conscious during a prolonged death. These practices differ from what welfare science would recommend, but the economic pressures on an industry competing with very low-cost imported alternatives limit investment in improvements. Consumer demand for welfare-certified catfish could drive change.
