Welfare Considerations

Intensive carp farming concentrates these stress responses. Harvest by pond draining without stunning exposes fish to hypoxia, crowding, and physical trauma over prolonged periods. Live sale practices in many markets involve keeping fish in cramped conditions for extended periods. The scale of carp production — tens of billions of individuals — means even modest welfare improvements would affect an enormous number of animals. Transitioning to pre-slaughter stunning, improving water quality management, and reducing stocking densities would be high-impact improvements.
