Wolverines are powerful, solitary mustelids with enormous home ranges whose welfare is threatened by climate change, trapping, and habitat fragmentation across boreal and mountain ecosystems.
Wolverine welfare is threatened on two fronts: trapping-related suffering and climate-driven habitat loss. Leg-hold traps cause bone fractures, joint dislocation, and prolonged stress before the trapper returns — sometimes days later. Climate change threatens wolverine reproduction directly: loss of spring snowpack collapses denning opportunities, causing cubs born in insufficient snow to die of exposure. As solitary animals with vast territorial needs, wolverines are extremely vulnerable to habitat fragmentation — high mortality from roads and trapping within their range can cause local population collapse. Given their small global population and specialized habitat needs, wolverines may be one of the North American species most acutely threatened by climate change.
