Veal production — using young dairy bull calves — raises serious welfare concerns about isolation, dietary restriction, and movement confinement that are increasingly being regulated in many countries.
Traditional white veal production represents one of the most clearly documented examples of systemic welfare failure in any farming system. The combination of maternal separation, social isolation, movement restriction, and deliberate iron deficiency to produce pale meat constitutes multiple simultaneous welfare violations. Calves in individual crates cannot perform any natural social or locomotor behaviors — stress levels are demonstrably high. European reforms mandating group housing and minimum space have significantly improved veal welfare. In the US, the market shift toward "humanely raised" veal with group housing, outdoor access, and appropriate nutrition represents meaningful improvement. Consumer demand drives these reforms faster than regulation alone.
