Welfare Considerations

Water deprivation is among the most acutely distressing welfare failures in pig production. Pigs are highly motivated to drink — thirst develops rapidly and causes intense behavioral distress. Inadequate water provision causes a cascade of welfare problems: urinary tract disease from concentrated urine, reduced feed intake and growth (increasing time to slaughter), competitive aggression around drinkers, and severe suffering during summer heat events when water needs are highest. Silent drinker malfunction — where nipple or bowl drinkers fail without obvious visible signs — can deprive entire pens of water for hours or days before detection. Daily water system monitoring is a minimum welfare standard. Lactating sows with inadequate water suffer additionally through milk failure and consequent piglet suffering.
