Wolverines face an acute climate-driven welfare and conservation crisis as the persistent spring snowpack they require for successful denning shrinks across their range.
Wolverine welfare is acutely tied to snow conditions in ways that create genuine, measurable suffering when conditions fail. Female wolverines unable to find suitable persistent snowpack attempt denning in insufficient snow — resulting in den collapse and cub death from exposure. This represents a direct welfare failure caused by climate change. In areas where trapping remains legal, leg-hold traps cause bone fractures, dislocations, and prolonged suffering as wolverines struggle against capture before the trapper arrives. The combination of climate-driven habitat loss and ongoing trapping pressure makes wolverines one of the most welfare-and-conservation-urgent species in North America. ESA Threatened status provides some protection but cannot substitute for climate action.
