Pancreatitis is one of the most painful gastrointestinal conditions in dogs, often triggered by high-fat diets and preventable with appropriate nutrition and owner awareness.
Pancreatitis causes significant and often prolonged suffering in dogs. The praying posture — front legs extended, hindquarters raised — is a behavioural indicator of severe abdominal pain that owners can learn to recognise. Hospitalisation for intravenous fluids, pain management, and anti-nausea medication is standard for acute cases. Without prompt treatment, severe pancreatitis can cause multi-organ failure. Because many cases are triggered by dietary indiscretion — including holiday feast table scraps — owner education is one of the most effective welfare interventions. Long-term management with a low-fat diet significantly reduces recurrence.
