Despite their reputation for hardiness, tilapia experience significant welfare harms in intensive aquaculture. High stocking densities cause chronic stress, aggressive interactions leading to fin erosion and open wounds, and competition for food that leaves subordinate fish undernourished. Water quality in intensive ponds often becomes marginal — high ammonia, low oxygen — causing gill damage and respiratory distress. Hormone treatment for sex reversal during early development raises welfare questions about developmental stress. Slaughter methods vary widely, with many operations still using slow asphyxiation. Better practice facilities prioritise lower stocking densities, water quality monitoring, and improved slaughter methods.
