Channel catfish welfare in aquaculture is largely unexamined by welfare science, despite the enormous numbers involved. Hypoxic events in intensive ponds — where oxygen depletes overnight — cause mass distress and mortality, with fish congregating at the surface in apparent respiratory distress before dying. Crowding-induced chronic stress suppresses immunity, leading to disease outbreaks requiring chemical treatments that are themselves stressful. Catfish have functional pain systems; their strong chemoreception suggests acute sensitivity to water quality deterioration and tissue injury. Welfare improvements are achievable through better pond aeration management, lower stocking densities, and development of humane slaughter standards.
