Feedlot cattle experience multiple simultaneous welfare challenges. High-grain diets cause acidosis and liver abscesses that create chronic pain. Confinement prevents the movement and social behaviours cattle evolved for. Respiratory disease — often triggered by the stress of transport and feedlot entry — causes fever, laboured breathing, and suffering affecting a significant proportion of every feedlot cohort. Heat stress during summer months can be severe enough to cause mass deaths. Lameness from extended standing on hard or wet substrates reduces feed access and causes prolonged pain. Improving feedlot welfare requires addressing both management practices and the fundamental model of intensive confinement.
