Egg labelling creates a welfare information gap that allows misleading marketing to substitute for meaningful welfare standards. "Cage-free" became the industry's response to consumer cage concerns — but hens in cage-free barns at high density without outdoor access have some welfare improvements over battery cages but remain in environments that prevent many natural behaviours. The most welfare-meaningful distinctions are whether hens have genuine, regular outdoor access; whether stocking density permits normal movement; and whether hens have perches, nesting boxes, and foraging substrate.
