Heat stroke is a rapidly fatal condition in dogs that causes extreme suffering and is almost entirely preventable with owner education and simple precautions.

Welfare Considerations

Heat stroke causes extreme suffering in dogs. As core temperature rises, dogs experience progressive distress — frantic panting, salivation, weakness, vomiting, and ultimately seizures and unconsciousness. The physiological experience is comparable to severe fever combined with suffocation. Death without intervention is rapid but agonising. Because owners frequently underestimate how quickly heat becomes dangerous — and because the consequences of inaction are irreversible — education about the car temperature crisis and the importance of immediate cooling is the highest-impact welfare intervention. Brachycephalic breeds are at particular risk because their restricted airways prevent efficient panting, making them vulnerable at temperatures tolerated by other dogs.

What You Can Do

Never leave a dog in a parked car — even briefly on a mild day
On hot days, walk dogs only in early morning or evening when temperatures are lower
If you see a dog in a hot car showing distress, note the registration and call emergency services
Know the emergency cooling protocol: cool water (not cold) applied to neck, armpits, and groin while rushing to a vet
