Welfare Considerations

GDV causes some of the most intense acute suffering in companion dogs. Dogs deteriorate from apparent health to cardiovascular collapse within 2-6 hours without treatment. The rapid onset and severity mean owner recognition and response speed is the primary welfare determinant — delays of even an hour significantly worsen prognosis. For at-risk breeds, prophylactic gastropexy during routine neutering prevents the volvulus (twisting) component, making it the most impactful preventive welfare intervention available.
