Precision livestock farming technologies are increasingly applied to broiler chicken welfare monitoring, with potential to detect distress and disease far earlier than current inspection methods.
Technology has genuine potential to improve farmed chicken welfare by enabling detection of welfare problems at scales impossible for human observers. A farm of 50,000 broilers cannot be individually assessed by farmers; AI monitoring that continuously analyses movement, vocalisation, and mortality patterns provides a welfare safety net that human inspection cannot replicate. Early detection of lameness, respiratory disease, or heat stress enables earlier intervention — reducing the duration of suffering per affected bird. However, technology is a tool, not a substitute for improved housing standards. Welfare monitoring that enables high-density systems to continue by detecting and treating individual suffering is a partial improvement; structural changes in stocking density and environment remain necessary.
