Navicular disease — degeneration of the navicular bone and associated structures — is a leading cause of chronic lameness and suffering in sport and companion horses.
Navicular disease causes chronic pain that progressively limits horses' ability to move comfortably. Affected horses show a characteristic shortened stride, toe-pointing when resting, and reluctance on hard surfaces — all indicators of ongoing foot pain. Without management, the condition worsens over time, and horses may be euthanised when pain becomes unmanageable. The chronic nature means horses may suffer for extended periods before owners recognise the progression of lameness beyond "mild stiffness." Modern diagnostic techniques including MRI enable earlier, more precise diagnosis that allows targeted treatment. Appropriate corrective farriery — addressing hoof balance and breakover — is the cornerstone of navicular management alongside medical treatment.
