Sea trout (Salmo trutta) are anadromous fish with complex physiological and behavioural needs. Intensive aquaculture conditions can impair their welfare significantly, from sea lice infestation to suppressed migratory drives.
Farmed sea trout face the double challenge of physiological stress from captivity and intense parasite pressure from sea lice. High lice burdens cause chronic pain and immune suppression, reducing feed conversion and animal wellbeing simultaneously. Freshwater treatments and cleaner fish (wrasse and lumpfish) are used to control lice, but cleaner fish welfare itself is an emerging concern. Land-based recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) avoid sea lice entirely but require high energy inputs. Welfare-conscious farming means monitoring key indicators, adopting lower stocking densities, and using effective pre-slaughter stunning.
