Captive Chimpanzee Social Needs

Chimpanzees have complex social structures requiring large stable groups and sophisticated environments in captivity.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Chimpanzees in captivity with inadequate social environments develop severe behavioral abnormalities including self-directed behavior, stereotypies and aggression. As our closest relatives with complex emotional lives, their suffering in substandard captive environments is particularly acute. Modern accredited zoos and sanctuaries provide substantially better conditions than past facilities.
