Black rhino welfare intersects with conservation management in complex ways. Anti-poaching surveillance including helicopter patrols and ranger presence creates environmental disturbance that causes chronic stress in remaining populations. Yet without these interventions, individual welfare from poaching is catastrophic. Welfare-optimal conservation for black rhinos requires minimising management disturbance while maintaining protective coverage — a balance that conservation managers work to achieve through technology (camera traps, GPS monitoring) that reduces ranger intrusion while maintaining deterrence.
