Fish welfare science has advanced rapidly since the early 2000s, building a strong evidence base for pain, stress, and positive welfare in teleost fish. This science is now informing real changes in aquaculture regulation and practice.
Fish welfare science has moved from contested fringe to mainstream biology over two decades. The evidence that fish experience pain and stress in ways that matter morally is now strong enough that scientific and regulatory bodies globally have accepted the case for welfare standards. The translation from laboratory science to farm practice is accelerating: welfare indicators developed in research settings are being adapted into farm-level assessment tools, regulatory changes are requiring pre-slaughter stunning, and certification schemes are incorporating welfare criteria. The remaining challenges are species coverage (most research focuses on salmonids), scale (hundreds of billions of animals across diverse production systems), and welfare positive dimensions (moving beyond pain avoidance to positive experience promotion).
