Pangasius (striped catfish) from Vietnam is one of the world's most widely exported fish species. Produced at massive scale in delta pond systems, welfare conditions have improved with certification but significant concerns remain.
Pangasius welfare presents a mixed picture. The species' physiological tolerance of low oxygen has historically been used to justify crowding that would be unacceptable for other fish species, but tolerance is not the same as preference. Behavioural indicators of stress — reduced feeding, surface crowding, fin damage — occur at high densities even in pangasius. Slaughter without prior stunning is the most acute welfare concern: large fish experiencing ice water immersion without insensibilisation show prolonged stress responses before loss of consciousness. Certification schemes have encouraged improvements in water quality management, reduced antibiotic use, and better record-keeping, but welfare-specific standards for stocking density and slaughter have lagged behind environmental metrics. Given the enormous scale of pangasius production, even modest improvements in stocking density or the adoption of electrical stunning before slaughter would have significant aggregate welfare impact.
